We are one month away from Valentine’s Day and we think it’s safe to say that if you are in Japan, women mostly do all the work, not men. Women will be the ones to give chocolates, show affections on this day and so on. During this time, most department stores in Japan will be flooded with mostly women.

Commonly, women will give men chocolates, however, there are a few types of chocolates you must know. For example, Giri Choco is given to male family members, colleagues, and friends. For partners such as boyfriends, they will receive Honmei Choco. For single ladies, they will get a box of Tomo Choco from their female friends. So, which box will you receive this year?

Besides chocolates, we have a few date ideas to impress your partner and to make this day feels very special. Here are some of the romantic locations in Japan that you can go.

Ryuren Bell of Love

Secure your love by locking them on a fence near Enoshima Island. Similar to the Pont des Arts, Paris, the place is known as Ryuren Bell of Love and it is one of the favourite spots for couples to go during Valentine’s Day. You can bring your own locks and once you write you and your couple’s names on it, you must throw away the key in the sea.

Other than that, the background story behind this romantic spot involved the goddess of everything that flows such as water and music called Benzaiten and a five-headed dragon. It is said that Benzaiten created Enoshima Island to incarcerate the dragon that was always causing disruption near the area. However, there is a romantic twist to the story, whereby Benzaiten decided to marry the dragon so it would not cause any more disturbances. After you have done the romantic custom, you and your partner can ring the bell to wish for a good future.

Kashiwazaki Two Lover’s Point

Located in the Niigata Prefecture, another romantic spot couples can go to is the Two Lover’s Point. This place actually has a sister in Guam where they both share similar tragic love stories. In Guam, it is recognized as Puntan Dos Amantes, meanwhile, in Japan, it’s Koibito Misaki.

The story behind Kashiwazaki Two Lover’s Point was about a woman who drowned on her way to Sado Island to meet her lover in Kashiwazaki. After finding out the sad news, the lover then took his own life. Since then, many couples will come here to secure their love by attaching locks on the fence.

Apart from that, put aside the tragic love story and enjoy the beautiful view of the Sea of Japan from the hill. On your way here, mention the Japanese name (Koibito Misaki) if you want to ask for directions.

Koi no Ki Shrine is a part of Mizuta Tenmangu Shrine where it is recommended to pray at this shrine first before you proceed to the love shrine. As you make your way to the shrine, you will see many heart shapes painted in a straight line on the walkway. Once you reached the gate, look for ten hidden hearts around the area. Then, you and your partner can pray for everlasting love in the shrine. On March and November, a festival will be held for visitors to place a pink love-shaped fortune paper to a special area of the shrine for a good luck.
