Nestled in the western part of Japan is the underrated Chugoku region. Chugoku comprises prefectures such as Hiroshima, Shimane, Tottori, Okayama and Yamaguchi. These prefectures have individual attractions which are very unique. The most visited prefecture in Chugoku is definitely Hiroshima. Most travellers will travel here to check out the notorious Atomic Bomb Dome, which was the remnant of a deadly atomic bombing occurred in 1945.

Each prefecture provides the best tourist spots which must not be missed. For instance, Tottori Sand Dunes, Motonosumi Inari Shrine in Yamaguchi, Okayama Castle or famously known as ‘crow castle’ due to its dark exterior and Shimane’s Adachi Museum of Art. Feel free to explore these prefectures so you’ll get the gist of what Chugoku really is.

So, for Muslim travellers, we will provide a list of mosques as well as prayer spaces that you can use and find in the Chugoku region. Although there aren’t many facilities as compared to Kanto and Kansai, it’s good to know that Chugoku’s Muslims community took several initiatives to build these facilities to accommodate its fellow brothers and sisters.


Hiroshima

Hiroshima Islamic Cultural Centre

The Islamic centre for Muslims community and travellers in Hiroshima consists of five main floors with facilities such as seminar rooms, multi-purpose rooms, kitchen, a dining area, Da’wah room and prayer hall. The centre organizes many cultural and social activities yearly to strengthen the relationship between the Muslims community here. In addition, this cultural centre opens every day to perform five daily prayers, Friday prayers, tarawih (during Ramadhan month), Eid prayer (on the first day of Eid) and as such.

They also provide services like teaching Islamic lessons which are available in English to those who are interested, Islamic lectures and other Islamic-related services. This first mosque of Hiroshima encourages Non-Muslims to come and get to know Islam in depth. Moreover, they also rent apartments and houses for students as well as families. The Outlets Hiroshima

A shopping mall of many branded products such as Salvatore Ferragamo, Nike, Puma, Coach and Bally was opened in Hiroshima last year. The open-air mall also consists of cinema, bowling, game arcade and VR centre too. In addition, they installed a prayer room complete with wudhu’ space and Qibla’. The prayer room is located close to the ‘Hoshiokage area’ on the first floor.

Don Quijote Hiroshima Hacchoubori

Other than The Outlets, Muslims can also pray at one of the top discount stores in Japan which is Don Quijote, Hiroshima. To those who have never been to Don Quijote, this store sells only the best Japanese foods/snacks, souvenirs, cosmetic, costume and other miscellaneous items with a very great price.

Inside, they provide a prayer space that can fit up to four people at the same time. They also placed prayer mats, Qibla’ mark and a shoe locker. For wudhu’, Muslims need to go to the restroom. Other than that, they will find the prayer space very comforting and complete with its essentials.

Sumiya Spa & Hotel

If you are looking for hotels to stay, you can book Sumiya Spa & Hotel because they provide a large prayer room on the top floor of the hotel. Moreover, it is furnished with hot water, Qibla’ compass, prayer mats, and also wifi. Besides, the room can accommodate up to four people. In addition, you can find the Tourist Information Centre as well as Halal bento in the hotel which is very convenient for Muslims.

Okayama

Before we start, in 2016, Okayama City alongside Malaysian-based travel agency, Corporate Information Travel (CIT) Sdn Bhd inaugurated Okayama Style Health Tourism Project. The project was intended to promote Okayama as the main destination for Muslim travellers due to Okayama’s safety rate, places and cuisines.

In the coming years, Okayama will build more Muslim-friendly facilities such as mosques and restaurants in order to achieve the objective. In total, there are about 700 to 800 Muslims residing in Okayama.

Okayama Islamic Centre

The main Islamic centre in Okayama is located not far from Okayama University. The two storey building frequently conducts daily prayers, Friday prayers and Muslims wedding ceremony. Inside, you will find a big praying area, a bathroom and a small kitchen that can be fully utilised by guests.

Okayama Royal Hotel

Other Muslim-friendly hotels in Chugoku is Okayama Royal Hotel. Situated near to Okayama’s top attractions such as Okayama Castle, this hotel provides the best comforts for their Muslim guests.

You can enter the prayer room any time needed as it is open 24 hours. However, to access the room, you need to inform the reception first. Next, if you would like to dine in the restaurant, for Halal meals, you may book a reservation beforehand so they can prepare the Halal and Muslim-friendly ingredients. Lastly, you can also get Halal souvenir here such as Kibi Dango (wagashi), a sweet snack that resembles mochi.

Hotel Granvia Okayama

Another hotel practices in providing Muslim facilities such as prayer room and Halal meal is Hotel Granvia Okayama.

The hotel prepares a prayer room that sits on the second floor of the hotel. The room is equipped with prayer mats and Qibla’ mark. Furthermore, they also include five twin rooms that have Qibla’ mark on the ceiling, which is very helpful for Muslim guests.

As for Halal meals, on the second floor, a restaurant called Olivier includes a Muslim-friendly menu that costs ¥ 4,000. At the hotel’s buffet, they will display which dishes contain alcohol and pork using ‘Peach Mark’. ‘Peach Mark’ is a logo to inform whether the food or place is Muslim-friendly or not. This was implemented by Okayama City for the mentioned project earlier.

Tottori

Tottori Masjid

The one and only mosque in Tottori Prefecture is Tottori Masjid. The number of Muslims community in the area is around 50 people, more or less. Regardless of the small number of Muslims here, they still put up an effort to build a mosque so they have a proper place to perform prayers, provide Islamic-related services and receive Islamic teachings. The building consists of two floors with eight rooms on each floor, a kitchen and a bathroom. The mosque is very close to Tottori University, which means Muslim students can easily go here for prayers.

Shimane

Shimane Masjid

This lesser-known prefecture has their very own mosque and they received a lot of Muslims visitors since its opening. With activities like Iftar party, Eid celebration and daily prayers, this is the only way that the Muslims community in Shimane are able to get together under the same roof.

They also welcome non-Muslim visitors to visit the mosque but needs to state the reason and visiting dates beforehand. For non-Muslims, they need to wear loose and conservative clothes to respect Islam.
