Hokkaido has been a popular destination for Malaysians and overall Asians for many years now. However, since the boom for Muslim travel has increase significantly over the last two to three years, Hokkaido now is fast become on of the popular Japanese Muslim destinations.

First of all, if you are a fresh visitor to Hokkaido, you should know that the main airport that you will arrive on most Asian flights are at the New Chitose Airport, which is the international arrival for the island of Hokkaido.

Most Muslim travelers would usually stay around the Sapporo area due to convenience and easy to find Muslim friendly facilities like hotels, restaurants and mosques. But bare in mind that Hokkaido Island is more than just Sapporo, and moving around the northern most part of Japan is actually quite easy.

This article will feature the Muslim friendly facilities that are found throughout the island of Hokkaido, and is currently up to date as of September 2018.

Muslim Friendly Hotels in Hokkaido

The most important element of Muslim travel is a Muslim friendly hotel, where facilities include Halal menus, private rooms, compass for prayer direction and even prayer mats. However, in Hokkaido, there are only three main hotels that are certified as Muslim friendly, and they are;

Hotel Mystays Premier Sapporo Park

Located smack in the center of Sapporo is this Muslim friendly hotel, which is perfect for the Muslim traveler who loves the city lifestyle. Overall, most of the popular tourist attraction are within walking distance from Hotel Mystays, making it convenient. But take note that once you live in the main city area, you will usually have breakfast and then have our other meals around the city.

At Hotel Mystays, there is a Halal menu available, and they have a fine dining restaurant plus a unique from Farm to Table restaurant. However, you need to double check with the restaurant on the Halal food menu.

Getting here is relatively easy as it takes only 2 minutes walk from Exit 1 of the Nakajima Koen Station on Nanboku subway Line. And from the New Chitose Airport, it is only a one minute walk from Nakashima Park bus stop for Airport Shuttle Bus. From the airport, it takes a journey of 80 minutes by shuttle bus into Sapporo.

Sahoro Resort Hotel in Shintoku

This resort is located just by Mount Sahoro in the center of Hokkaido. This Muslim friendly hotel and resort is specially catered to those who love the outdoors, nature and hiking, therefore if you are a city type of traveler, then this place is not for you. The surrounding of the resort is blessed with abundance of nature, national parks, lakes and historical sights.

Among the activities at the Sahoro Resort, there are many outdoor sports available like white water rafting at two rivers, canoeing or kayaking, special fishing tours, horse riding, mountain biking, bird watching and even bear watching! Yes, there is a Sahoro Bear Mountain nearby where special tours take you trekking to observe the Japanese bears in their natural habitat.

Halal food is available at the hotel only, and the provide a Halal menu for all Muslim visitors. You need to inform them when yo make your bookings, and the hotel will prepare you Muslim friendly room with compass.

To get here from the New Chitose Airport, you can take the JR Chitose Line train bound for Sapporo from New Chitose Airport Station and get off at Minami-Chitose Station (about 3 minutes). Then change to the JR Chitose Line train bound for Obihiro / Kushiro and get off at Shintoku Station (about 75 minutes). From there, take the shuttle bus bound for Sahoro Resort (about 15 minutes).

If you are self driving, the resort is located about 100 minutes drive from the New Chitose Airport or about two hours and forty minutes drive from the center of Sapporo.

Rusutsu Resort in Abuta-gun

This ski resort and onsen is only a 90 minute drive from the New Chitose Airport and favors those who are into the winter sports or those who want a unique golf experience. But overall, they cater to all kinds of tourist seeking a Hokkaido Muslim experience.

A bonus for Muslim family travelers is that the resort also offers an amusement park with not one or two, but eight roller coasters! Overall, for anyone staying here at the Rusutsu Resort, you will most probably be spending your entire holiday around the resort area. Why? Because at the amusement park and its surrounding offers a total of 75 things to do! And with three of four days here, you will not be able to even achieve doing half of it.

Other facilities include an onsen, indoor wave pool, an indoor carousel, game world, 4-D Theater, Musical fountains and many more. Think of this place as a one stop integrated resort similar to the Malaysian Resorts World.

With so much facilities available here, Muslim travelers can dine at the hotel restaurant and request for the Halal menu, which is specially curated by Indonesia Muslim Food and Travel adviser Ms. Widya Sumi, who is a resident of Hokkaido. For any Halal request, they need to be booked three days in advance at the restaurant, and the menu is on request only.

Mosques and Prayer Rooms around Hokkaido

For the Muslim travelers, there are currently only two mosques in Hokkaido and a few prayer rooms or Surau available. But one needs to travel to locate them as they are spread all over. There are only four prefectures that offer these praying facilities which are Sapporo, Asahikawa, Obihiro and Otaru, and one at the Chitose airport.

Halal food selection around Hokkaido

There are over 40 Halal restaurants found all over Hokkaido Island, and a majority of them are found in Sapporo, Asahikawa, Obihiro and of course at the New Chitose Airport. A majority of them are serving Japanese food, but there are more Halal and Muslim friendly restaurants serving Indian or Middle Eastern cuisine.

If you are not a fussy traveler, just look for any Indian, Pakistani, Nepalese, Bangladeshi, Egyptian or Turkish restaurant as they are mostly Halal or do not serve any pork. For traditional Japanese food, there are some traditional Japanese restaurants, but these need to be researched carefully.
